Abductions are also war offences!
– The Sudar Oli Editorial
(September 06, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Amnesty International has expressed grave concern that persons responsible for enforced disappearances are still at large and move about freely in Sri Lanka.
It has also openly charged that the offenders operate without any fear of prosecution since there is no independent institution to inquire and investigate into disappearances.
What does it reflect? Amnesty International and other international organizations have doubts about the integrity of the Human Rights Commission appointed by the government. They are also of the view, it appears, that Sri Lanka lacks a mechanism which can deter disappearances and deal with offenders. They also seem to doubt whether there could be their connivance with offenders in committing criminal offences.
There are reports that the US government has shown concern whether there are war offences during the military operations. International community is vigilant!
