What is GSP plus: EU Presentation From Sangam Sri Lankan Government The Economist Germany

Sri Lanka, a big violator of rights, has been a beneficiary of generous GSP plus by European Union. This is coming up for renewal, and sometimes in October EU may decide to extend for another three years or not.

We, human rights activists, are urging EU not to renew GSP plus, based on Sri Lanka’s record on rights. Sri Lanka ranks in the top three nations in the world for disapperances and threat to media freedom.

Earlier this year, Sri Lanka was dropped as a member from UN Human Rights Council. In 2006, 17 aid workers of French NGO were massacred and ACF quit Sri Lanka this year, in frustration. An international group of eminent persons also quit this year as they were unable to bring justice to the victims of rights violations.

In 2005, Pakistan lost GSP Plus. Last year, EU withdrew GSP plus from Belarus, so let us make this year Sri Lanka's turn !

Based on the eligiblity criteria set by EU on GSP plus, it is obvious Sri Lanka should not qualify. But, Sri Lankan government will try anything to hide its atrocities. Therefore, we launch this campaign to deny GSP plus to Sri Lanka!
