War climate and problems faced by children!
- Virakesari Editorial
(August 27, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Children in the north and east are affected as a result of the war, Tsunami, economic crisis etc. children are affected in all ways. As a result, children have dropped out from schools and are awaiting in queues to purchase food items. Some children are going to work with their parents due to poverty.
It can be noted that the country’s war climate has affected not only the normal people but also the children. It is important to take special care regarding the future of these children.
In the back drop of the war, the north east children’s education is severely affected. Children are also affected socially as a result of the war. Particularly due to the war in Vanni, many people including children are displaced and are living without basic facilities.
Furthermore, many children from Killinochchi district are unable to sit the year 5 scholarship examination due to the war. In the background of the war, many children who have lost their parents are in the brink of sufferings. It would be a humanitarian help if the UNICEF and NGOs will come forward to help them.

Onus on religious bodies to expose human tragedy
- Uthayan Editorial
(August 27, Jaffna, Sri Lanka Guardian) Vanni faces another human tragedy. Following the war, the people of Vanni are in a pitiable plight of having lost their belongings and having been displaced. Therefore, there is an onus cast on the religious bodies and religious dignitaries to expose the human tragedy in Vanni and seek immediate relief to the suffering innocent civilians.
Rev.Fr.Jebanesan has raised a relevant issue with the international community. He has questioned the propriety of the UN and the West racing to condemn the attack on Georgia by Russia, while observing a deafening silence over the multi-barrel attacks and air raids in the Tamil homeland and killing civilians including children.
He has injected a sense of hope and solace among the displaced that destruction has an end and that in the aftermath of the destruction, there will be new life. He reiterates that it is a lesson of history. And then, finally, he stresses that a new era will dawn for the Tamil people, who live in despair.
Rev.Fr.Thomas Saundaranayagam, Bishop of Jaffna, has made a moving appeal to show concern over the human tragedy in Vanni.
Meanwhile, it is the contention of President Rajapakse that the military operation is not a war but a humanitarian mission.
When Sinhala Buddhist extremism unleashes violence on the innocent Tamil civilians, shouldn’t the religious organizations voice for their followers, who are in distress?
Religious leaders who fail to discharge their sacred duty towards their followers at a desperate hour, will be dismissed as opportunists!

The South endorses the war!
– The Sudar Oli Editorial
(August 27, Colombo, Sri Lanka Gurdian) The ruling party has won the elections for the North Central and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councils.
President Rajapakse during his election campaign maintained that the people will give a verdict endorsing his military operations against the LTTE and that it would be a mandate for his war while the opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe sought a verdict against the government for the increasing cost of living and for co-existence.
The South has articulated that they are not worried about poverty or the economic problems and that they are for a victory of the Sri Lankan forces.
During the 2001 December elections, when the cry was “war or peace’, the South chose peace and rejected war.
The verdict of the South is that the people have endorsed the war unleashed under the guise of “humanitarian mission”.
Whatever the rights and wrongs of the verdict may be, the people have given a mandate for a military solution, while the international community insists on a political solution for treating the minorities with honour and so on.
Having given an undertaking to the international community to find a political solution, the government makes moves according to its war agenda, which has now been endorsed by the people at an election.
It is high time that the international community realized that there is no political solution through peaceful negotiations and acted accordingly. Will the international community see the message of the election?

Provincial Council elections!
- Thinakkural Editorial
(August 27, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) What message do the elections for the North Central and Sabragamuwa Provincial Councils convey?
President Rajapakse, who sought a mandate for his military operations against the LTTE, hails the election result as a victory for the motherland and he further states that the results are a verdict of the people of the country. President Rajapakse maintains that the whole country is behind him in his war efforts.
As far as the opposition UNP is concerned, UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake states that they have won more votes than on the last occasion although the ruling party abused State power and State resources to conduct its campaign. This contention is meaningless.
The JVP, which always boasts that they are a third political force in the country, has done miserably at the election. In fact, JVP was campaigning that President Rajapakse won the Presidential polls due to the alliance with the JVP.
In fact, the crux of the campaign by the JVP during the elections was that the Rajapakse regime would not have continued the military operations against the LTTE had it not been for the pressure exerted by their party.
Let us see the truth of the matter. Is it that the people have given an endorsement for the war? Is it that people are not concerned about the economic crisis? Is it that people endorse the human rights violations in the country?
Undoubtedly, due to the propaganda by the government machinery, the people generally believe that a military solution is possible. The government uses the war propaganda to distract the public attention from the economic crisis. War against the LTTE dominates the political agenda of the government, while, there is no vibrant opposition that can confront this war propaganda of the government.
