HOLLAND, PA -- 03/25/09 -- Human rights organization Tamils Against Genocide issued a strongly worded statement today condemning the Sri Lankan government for practicing ethnic cleansing under the guise of fighting terrorism and highlighting evidence and eye witness accounts backing their assertions.

Statement by Tamils Against Genocide:

Tamils in Sri Lanka are facing a "Final Solution." A human catastrophe is unfolding as the Sri Lankan government is declaring military victory over the Tamil Tigers. They are continuing their ethnic cleansing of the Tamil civilian population with a vengeance under the guise of fighting terrorism.

Contradicting prior claims by the UN that they "don't count bodies," documents acquired by Tamils Against Genocide show the UN has now involuntarily admitted that the "minimum number of documented civilian casualties since 20 January 2009, as of 7 March 2009 in the conflict area of Mullaitivu Region [is] 9,924 casualties including 2,683 deaths and 7,241 injuries."

Eleven members of British Parliament have signed a letter, stating, "The Sri Lankan government has pursued a brutal military campaign in which it has bombed and shelled its own citizens, including those in government-designated 'safe zones,' displacing, injuring and killing many thousands of innocent civilians."

On March 4, the BBC reported that The International Committee of the Red Cross warns of "an impending humanitarian catastrophe" in Sri Lanka.

Patients tell MSF (Doctors Without Borders) that, "People are being shelled for days on end, with the dead and wounded surrounding them." The NGO stated there is a severe lack of medical care and not enough food and drinking water.

Eye witness accounts of Tamil civilians running for their lives from the killing are abundant. TamilsAgainstGenocide.com has posted a chilling eye witness account from a woman who visited the camps, describing the carnage and human suffering in horrific detail.

The Sri Lankan government apologizes to no one. They openly say they will incarcerate Tamils for years in the camps. They do not claim that it is "collateral damage," nor do they apologize for shelling hospitals, using cluster and incendiary bombs on densely packed civilians, threatening doctors to leave, ordering the UN and all NGOS to quit and closing off the whole war zone from journalists, diplomats, NGOs or observers.

On 3/13 Sec. of State Clinton told Pres. Rajapkse that the Sri Lankan Army should not fire into the civilian areas of the conflict zone.

The international community has been insisting on ceasefire to no avail. The Government of Sri Lanka has been warned of committing war crimes. Opening the war zone to journalists, NGOs, humanitarian aid, medicine and monitors has been repeatedly advised. Tamils have long sought the right of self determination in their homeland. Must we witness a holocaust again and wring our hands later?

The group urges reporters and concerned parties to visit TamilsAgainstGenocide.com to view eye witness accounts and more details on the crisis in Sri Lanka.
