World focus on SL armed forces’ gains – Gotabhaya

“Narayanan told me you got the best army commander in the world”

Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said yesterday that the Sri Lanka Military had attracted world attention due to the major victories gained in the war against LTTE terrorism and that the Indian National Security Advisor M.K. Narayanan had told him that Sri Lanka had the world’s best army commander.

In a televised interview yesterday, Mr. Rajapaksa quoted Mr. Narayanan as having told him this during a meeting between the two. He also said that the Israeli Navy Commander, too, had requested the Director Operations of the Sri Lankan Navy to have a half hour discussion on what strategies were followed by the Sri Lankan Navy in countering the LTTE’s suicide boat attacks.

“The Sri Lankan Air Force has the world’s best pilots who can get the targets properly with minimum damage to civilians,” said Mr. Rajapaksa, quoting defence experts.

The Defence Secretary said that the security forces would definitely capture LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran if he had not fled the country.

Mr. Rajapaksa said that there was time when Prabhakaran tried to commit suicide by swallowing a cyanide capsule when he was trapped in his home town Velvetiturai, but later managed to slip into the Mullaitivu jungle. The Defence Secretary said that Prabhakaran had now changed, and would not attempt to commit

suicide.

“He may try to flee the country to a safer location and continue with his war from there,” He said.

Referring to the recent military gains, he said that the dedication, commitment and the valour of the soldiers were fundamental to these victories. He said the political leadership provided by President Rajapaksa was of paramount importance in curbing terrorism.

“There was pressure applied by international forces to stop the war and go for a negotiated settlement. These forces even pressured the countries supplying arms to Sri Lanka. On one occasion, the President had to telephone the Chinese Prime Minister four times and the Pakistani President seven or eight times. This shows how committed the President was to this exercise,” he said.

He said that the leadership provided by the commanders of the three forces was another major factor in crushing terrorism

“A major part of this war is conducted through ground operations. The leadership and the guidance of the Army Commander were fundamental in successfully carrying out these operations. At the same time, the Navy played a very big role by destroying the LTTE’s arms supply system. They destroyed ships carrying weapons for the terrorists in the deep sea. The Air Force also contributed a lot to this war by taking pictures of LTTE positions and attacking them,” he said.

He said that the military adopted new war strategies to weaken the enemy.

“We sometime used small teams for operations. Otherwise, we moved forward using in a wider front. At the same time, we took measures to greatly increase the numbers of the security forces so that the commanders could use soldiers for operations in a flexible manner,” he said.
