INDIAN PM WAS TALKING ABOUT STATE TERRORISM IN SRI LANKA, KILLING IT'S OWN CITIZENS AND TERRORIZING THEM.

A load of humbug!

"It is time for the international community to squarely confront the challenge of terrorism. The use of terrorism as an instrument of state policy is no longer acceptable. There should be no double standards in the global fight against terrorism. There are no good or bad terrorists. There is no cause that justifies the massacre and killing of innocent people…"

Thus spake a resolute Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on Thursday making an intervention in Lok Sabha during a discussion on the Mumbai disaster. India's indignation and desire to strike back with might and main are understandable. Unless India manages to remove the scourge of terrorism which is gnawing away at its social fabric, the future of the world's largest democracy will be bleak.

But, does India practise what it preaches to the rest of the world? PM Singh says, "The use of terrorism as an instrument of state policy is no longer acceptable". (Emphasis added) What does he really mean? His statement, arguably, has the trappings of a classic Freudian slip. Does he mean that it was acceptable earlier but suddenly became unacceptable after the Mumbai attacks?

Be that as it may, India is guilty of having adopted terrorism as an instrument of state policy in dealing with its neighbours. Sri Lanka, a victim of that macabre policy, is still suffering with thousands of precious lives lost in a protracted conflict being fuelled by some Indian leaders who are openly promoting Sri Lanka's terrorism.

PM Singh says there should be no double standards in the global fight against terrorism and censures Pakistan for the use of its soil by terrorists to launch attacks on India. Physician, one may say, heal thyself! India is practising the very antithesis of the policy it prescribes for others in dealing with Sri Lanka's terrorism. Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee has also faulted Pakistan over the Mumbai attacks. But, Prime Minister Singh has promised Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and other LTTE supporters that he will send FM Mukherjee to Colombo to discuss a ceasefire between the Sri Lankan military and the LTTE. Isn't this a glaring double standard? How can India blame Pakistan for 'not doing enough' to eliminate terrorism while undertaking to 'bail out' Sri Lanka's terrorists?

"There are no good or bad terrorists," PM Singh has said. That is a truism. He has added that there is no cause that justifies the massacre and killing of innocent people. Another truism! If so, the LTTE is bad and its cause cannot justify the killing of tens of thousands of innocent people including Rajv Gandhi. Then why on earth has the Indian government capitulated to the terror backers from Tamil Nadu desperate to prevent the LTTE being defeated?

If FM Mukherjee comes here next week as expected to apprise Sri Lanka of terror backer Karunanidhi's desire for a ceasefire, India will not only make a mockery of PM Singh's much advertised vow to defeat terrorism but stand accused of promoting terrorism, albeit indirectly.

Interestingly, the Indian premier has said, "We will give a fitting rebuff to our enemies". Bravo! But, isn't it oxygen that India is trying to give Sri Lanka's enemies?

PM Singh has said, "Truth and righteousness are on our side and together we shall prevail." It is our fervent hope that India will prevail but can Dr. Singh, who is giving in to Karunanidhi et al for political expediency at Sri Lanka's expense claim that truth and righteousness are on India's side? Sadly, we have our doubts!
